Envirofit’s distribution partnership in Chihuahua, Mexico continues to help support hundreds of Tarahumara families living in remote, mountainous regions of Mexico’s largest state. With most families still cooking over open fires, the tolls taken by traditional cooking in this remote region of Chihuahua are both personal and environmental. 80% of women report facing an episode of violence or abuse while traveling to collect firewood. In addition to these problems, 6,000,000 tons of CO2 are emitted per year, and 18,200 hectares of forest have been lost annually in Chihuahua over the last 20 years.
Envirofit partnered with Chihuahua leaders to help alleviate these issues by installing hundreds of Ecofogon Ahorrador plancha stoves in Tarahumara homes. As part of our ASA 360 Program, our installation teams are dedicated to providing training and support for households with Envirofit stoves, and their dedication to this project required impressive resolve. Travelling many miles through hot, difficult terrain, they faced adversity and some danger while crossing rivers, mountains and language barriers. Despite these challenges they said they were happy to take part in the project.
Over the 5-year lifespan of the stoves, will:
– Create 45 jobs
– Save 6,000 tons of fuel
– Reduce 5,600 tons of CO2 emissions
– Save 520,000 hours spent collecting fuel
Virtually eliminating smoke and toxic emissions by venting outside the home, the Eocofogon Ahorrador stoves use 60% less fuel and will greatly reduce the amount of smoke and Household Air Pollution Tarahumara families are exposed to. Envirofit Mexico’s dedication to reaching customers and providing installation and post-sales support has made them a preferred clean energy company for public-private partnerships throughout Mexico.
